Rifleman's excellent thread on evolution got me to thinking about various kinds of microscopic organisms such as viruses and bacteria. Most evidence of evolution does not happen within the life span of a human being but that's not the case with microbes. We're seeing new strains of flu viruses and bacteria that's resistant to our medications that emerge on a regular basis. If you don't believe in evolution then I can only assume you must believe that God is creating them. Because microbes require animals and people to be infected in order for them to survive it can't be stated that they've always been here, otherwise we would have been exposed to everything from the beginning and there would have to be a population that was infected throughout history to keep them going. In the early 1900's there was a flu that killed millions around the world including my Father's sister who was just a little girl. We'd never seen anything like it before.
Microbes reproduce very rapidly which allows evolutionary changes to happen so quickly. So I have to ask creationists if God isn't creating these new microbes then where are they coming from? Also, if God was creating them why would he do so? They serve no useful purpose and cause suffering and death. Any thoughts?
