Christianity is too generic and broad at times: he's right to go after the big fish.
I certainly agree with him about Jesus not being welcomed in the churches, it's the best kept secret.
Fry's talk with have had more punch if he realized/acknowledged that the Catholic Chuch doesn't require all members to swallow *every* piece of what it says hook, line and sinker. He misstated that point at least twice.
There is a more personal side of the church that he didn't seem to grasp well.
Still, thank you for posting the link. It was certainly interesting to see the perception.

I believe he says that for westernised and first world countries, the church is very accomodating, but for 3rd world and poor countries, it is a different matter. I think he does charity work overseas and that is how he knows. Maybe you did not catch that part?

Exactly my point. The RCC is merely the opiate of the masses who are not safely obsessed with Mammon. Transubstantiation, Mariolatry and other superstitions are for the gullible only.
It has always been so. The difference today is that there is more Mammon to go round than Roman patricians could spare. Embourgeoisement. It has Americans by the throat.
Since Jesus founded Christianity (of which the Catholic Church was the original) and told the Apostle Peter "Upon this rock you shall found my church", he would be welcomed with open arms into any Catholic Church in the world and is, daily, as He is present at every Eucharistic celebration.
As for Stephen Fry, he has a personal ax to grind; full of sound and fury signifying nothing.
Even as an atheist, I cringed at the pointed attacks made by Fry. Not that I could disagree, but felt a since of sympathy for the poor nuns and priest sitting in the audience as a result of lingering memories of jovial and intellectually smoking priest.
