Are rights the exclusive provence of man? Does the Earth and all other flora and fauna have rights as well? Many animist religions seem to think so imbuing spirituality in the natural environment and affording that environment with respect and adoration. The reason that I ask is a result of a number of environmental disasters from BP to the destruction of the Amazon, I think, should raise serious philosophical questions about mans relationship to its environment and environment which we know so little about.
The earth has the "right" to concoct a supervirus or blow open a supervolcano, or do some other natural "super disaster" to kill off all the annoying little apes scurrying around making a mess of the planet. Then she will set everything right, in her own time.
Ha, to think we are so important as to give "rights" to the world... isn't it the other way around?
No, I don't think the earth itself has rights. We have the right to use the resources around us, but I think that comes with a responsibility to not wreck them. You can pull water out of the well, but you gotta promise not to **** in it.
I think it's entertaining, but it's wrong. Perhaps the Earth will eventually erase all traces of us after we are gone, but in the meantime, while we are here, we need to try not to wreck it. We have to live here. Without the food chain being intact, without potable water, and without an atmosphere which will sustain life, we are toast. That is aside from my personal desire not to see the natural world destroyed for ethical and aesthetic reasons.
Actually, mankind doesn't have "rights" either. What we have is the concept of rights. We are living beings, just like all other living beings on this planet. The difference is that we believe (or simply accept without question) that we are somehow special. We have more developed brains, that's all.

If we pollute the planet for False Profits and gains, we pollute ourselves!....where is the more developed brain you are speakng of??
Especailly when God himself said way in the beginning of it all....to tend and keep the Garden...
i always thought that if we go too far which i think we have done in such a short time that somethin major and drastic will happen to stop us from destroying the planet all-toghether,im not talking about the end or anything but something that will stop the system in its path.,,whether its a super-volcano or a meteor or a giant tsunami or world war 3,or whatever i really do feel somethin has to happen and if not then we are all definitly doomed, well maybe not us but our children and childrens children and so on,.....somethin has to intervein.
if the earth has rights then we have definitly taken them rights from her!!!!IMHO

I said we have more developed brains that the other creatures on this planet. I made no commentary on our usage of those brains.
