I've been in Reno for a month and today is the first day I saw smog or is there something burning?

There are fires --- there is/was one burning outside of Fresno and the jet stream brought smoke north. In addition, we had a fire on Geiger, Peavine and in Sparks.

The winter can have times when the weather systems create an inversion; however, if you look at Reno over 365 days and not just focus on the SOME bad air days --- we, OVERALL, experience very clean air : )

Wink Smog in Reno

I personally feel that our air cleanliness in Reno is one of the best areas of the country. We do get our late fall and winter inversions that trap some smog but mostly wood burning particulates, and in the summer occasionally we will find ourselves downwind of a wildfire and that makes things stinky and hazy but ive only seen the smoke get real thick every 3 years or so and it last for just a few days. We don't have the same Carcinogenic or acid rain type pollutions as places back east, because of the west to east weather flow of earth we get mostly crisp air from the pacific ocean. The further east you go in the country, the more acid rain or truely dirty air you get. The Central Valley of California as well as LA has its own air quality issues, due to summertime patterns that trap the air over Central California up and down but it banks up against the west slopes of the sierra. Its not as nice here as say... rural montana, but its not bad at all and like i said most "smoggy" air you encounter is from wood burning or wildfires. Most of the year there is just so much downslope wind from the mountains that it clears the city out and makes things clean.

downslope wind? that would drive people nuts like me who hate wind. if i live on the other side or up at lake tahoe down to grass valley, what direction is the wind from?
