I was reading another site and people were mentioning something about summer fires in Reno. Is this a common occurrence?

It was in a comment where people were discussing the air quality of the area.

Fires happen but some of the worst smoke is often from fires on the other side of the mountains, the Yosemite area was burning last summer I believe it was and Reno was choked out with smoke.

There is a major mountain range with trees nearby, as well as lots and lots of open land with dry brush. Fire is natures way of cleaning house.

Because Nevada and California are dry, it's not uncommon to have 1 or more wildfires per year that pollute the Reno air. Typically the fires occur in the summer. The number of days of bad air depends on how quickly the fire can be put out. The Yosemite fire last year was not pleasant!

A favorite quote of mine goes something like this: " You know you're from Nevada IF ... you travel ANYWHERE and say 'Wow, it's humid.' "

Last year's number of California-based fires did give us acrid air for ... weeks? It did help to have portable air filters, but the length of the fires did not help.

I should mention that we're in South Reno.

Ohhh I didn't even think about it being the California wildfires. Guess I never considered that they would effect the Reno area.

Okay, thanks for the info.

Reno is only about 10 miles from the border, as the crow flies.
