Oh no don't worry I didn't take it that way at all.

I do know that there is a revitalization movement for downtown and do hope that they continue to try and improve it.

Well, I have seen people sleeping downtown in the park, across from the bus station. This was last summer.

My teenagers had never seen a panhandler until we walked downtown. I know that happens in every city. Reno is not immune.

Some pretty creepy people hang out at the McDonalds downtown.

I'm just not sure that I would want my mother (keeping the age of the OP in mind) living in downtown Reno and having to walk it's streets (I know what some of you are thinking...no, I dont mean that). But then again, the OP would be moving to Reno from NYC, so getting around Reno might be a "walk in the park" to her.

I never road a bus the time that I lived in Reno (14 months) but there were several bus stops in the area where I lived (Sky Mountain Dr.) and from what I saw, the bus stopped frequently, leading me to believe that they are reliable. I do think that the OP could live in Reno and get around to the places that she needs to go.

The OP mentioned cold...I do think that Reno is cold.

Sure Reno is cold, but nothing compared to NYC.

I grew up around Detroit, went to school around Washington, D.C. and worked in L.A. among other places. Reno is relatively safe by comparison. I would be more concerned about transportation if you don't drive and don't intend to (how will you get your groceries, do you want to continually be hauling them home on a bus in retirement?) plus the climate is much drier than eastern cities which some may not like. Before making such a drastic relocation from NYC to anywhere it would be best to visit several different times of the year, who knows you might discovery you have an allergy during a particular season. BTW, cultural opportunities for any city Reno's size will not compare favorably with NYC.
