I believe there's more to do in Reno on days off. Plus northern Calif is nearby. Plenty of entertainment. Flagstaff is a nice mountain resort college town. But Reno is all that and more. I've ran the numbers and the finances are definitely better in Reno.

i would pick Flagstaff in a heartbeat because of the proximity to the Grand Canyon.
hands down, not even close

i'll take quiet time in wild nature over "entertainment" any day of the week.

Not trying to party poop but a drive to Northern California will entail a lot of traffic, and winter drives can be iffy.

I love Reno for selfish reasons but that's just me. No one wants to live like a pauper when the neighbors are well to do. For the majority of transplants and retirees, they have to weigh their long term budget against the life they want to have in a new place.

Have you been to the Sierra or BLM quiet nature around Northern Nevada?

Every single day I’m in quiet nature here. The Grand Canyon is spectacular, but inaccessible for most. Not so all the nature here.

Again, WATER. Can you watch kite surfers near Flagstaff? Can you kayak on almost limitless alpine lakes? Go jet skiing or water skiing nearby? Sit on white sand, swim or climb boulders at Lake Tahoe? Take your pick of world class skiing resorts each weekend?

And Northern California is very accessible. It’s rare you can’t get over the Sierra or up to the Susanville area. Although, last winter 80 was shut down repeatedly:/ but that’s not the norm.

But, yes we definitely have more tourism in Northern Nevada and can have crowds at special events or popular beaches at Tahoe. There are many festivals and such here, it’s not my thing anymore, but if it’s yours, there is some special event every weekend.

Flagstaff/Sedona has just as expensive, if not more expensive cost of living than Northern Nevada.

Gas would be cheaper, income taxes higher in Arizona. Washoe County (Reno) has higher gas/sales/property taxes than surrounding counties.

Real estate in Reno is a bit above national average, but much much above national average in Flag/Sedona. I've already ran the numbers in smartassets.com. More take home pay in Nevada.

Having been to all of these places I prefer Reno. I moved here 26 years ago for my career and love it. It’s beautiful and I love the mild 4 seasons plus the close proximity to Lake Tahoe and Northern California. Luckily I bought because renting has gotten expensive but I am retired. It sounds like you would have a good job here.
