I tried to look this up in this section, but couldn't find anything, so sorry if this question has been asked before.
Here is my situation. I have an attached mother-in-law suite to my home that has 2 rooms, a bathroom, and a sorta kitchen as it has a sink and a refrigerator but no stove. It does not have a separate thermostat, but it does have 2 ceiling fans. It also has two entry ways, besides the door to the main house. I would like to rent it out, but I don't know what to call it, plus I need to find out how my neighborhood is zoned and I looked at my cities website and went to zoning, but I couldn't find it. Do I need to call or would it be there and I just don't see it? And if it isn't a 2 family, when one rents out a room, is that like a loophole?
BUT besides this, my plan is twhen it is rented out, to then allow the person to have the whole run of the house (and feed my cats!) at a reduced rate as he/she would then pay utilities when I am in Europe for 6 months. I will of course try to find a friend or an acquaintance to do this.
So...with all this information, do you think this is "doable"? Thank you for any input/advice.

Varies widly from county to county state to state. The "sorta" kitchen is what complicates things. You have to see what constitutes a kitchen(therby making it a multi-family and getting into zoning issues(sometimes that are impossible to get through)). If you didn't have a kitchen at all, you could probably say you are just renting out a room(or a couple of rooms) which usually isn't a problem.
In the northeast multifamilies are often zoned harshly(NIMBY, NIMBY, NIMBY!!) and its very difficult to get the proper permits for just a regular house with an addition.
But I see you live in Florida, I have no idea what its like there.
I just happened to be searching Trulia.com and Zillow.com for something else, but I remember one of those sites gave zoning info. for the houses I looked at. Just type in your address, city, state and zip.
