Hi, it's my first time renting and I was just wondering, how many times do you think it's ok to view the same unit? I'm new at this, and therefore, not so good at spotting out all the key points. I don't want to pester the realtor, but do you think it's ok to ask to see the same unit multiple times? Also, how much time should you spend looking at one unit?

If you're looking in New York, you may need to be prepared to view it once, and come with a check book and proof of income with you so can sign the deal on the spot. The New York rental market is usually very quick.

If you've found some units that aren't getting rented up right away (maybe it's only a Manhattan thing?), one viewing has always been enough for me, but if you're trying to make a tough choice between a few different places, I don't think anyone would be upset by a request to see it a second time, the third time might start to be pushing it, but if they have no other offers, I assume they would oblige.

Absolute maximum 2 viewings and then only if you are trying to decide between 2 finalists, or making the final decision on that unit. Sometimes you can ask to sign the rental agreement in the unit, and that gives you another chance to see it.

Make yourself a checklist and mark it for every unit you see, Take a couple of photos to remind you of which one it was. Write down things like size, number of bedrooms, quality of neighborhood, whether there is parking and laundry.

If it is important, take a tape measure and measure the size of the rooms, for example to make sure your bed will fit.

If apartments in Brooklyn go fast, then don't dawdle. Make up your mind fast and act.

if you need a lot of time to examine the apartment, then take it. Although I think I'd be upset if you were still measuring the width of doorways and counting the tiles in the bathroom after an hour. Although if there was a specific reason, such as wheelchair access, then I'd be accommodating.
