I just moved into a new place May 4th, was told my second month would be prorated.
Here is the problem. I picked up the keys 5 pm on May 3rd (Friday) because the leasing office told me they wouldn't be open on May 4th (they aren't open on weekends).
I said that's okay but I'm not moving in until the 4th. Which they said that's fine.
Today I get to the website to pay the next month's rent and see the pro-rated amount is only deducting 2 days, not 3.
Should I call and say something? I mean, I didn't pick up the keys until the EVENING, only because they weren't open Saturday, and did not enter the new premises until the 4th...
I feel like it's not my fault they aren't open on weekends, if that were the case they should have said they were going to charge me for picking up the keys on the 3rd. Which they never did. If that was the case I would have taken the day off on the 3rd to move in a day earlier!
The day you get the keys is the day you start paying for. You can't pick up the keys, have access to the unit and not expect to pay for it. It's the same with your move out..you will be charged for every day you have the keys in your hot little hands.

They should have said that from the start right? I explicitly asked this, because it's not my fault they don't want to be opened on weekends. Either way, they said they didn't charge me for the 3rd since I picked up the keys late in the day.

It's a difference of $35 for ONE day. I have no clue where you are getting your numbers from...
Anyways, I called. They said this is how they got the number:
Rent is $1050 a MONTH (@ MrRational), divide that by 30 days, and that's $35 per day. I lived in the unit for 28 days in May, so 28 days X $35/day = $980. I was saying it should be $945 because it's subtracting 3 days from the month.
3 days x $35 per day is $105. $1050-$105 = $945.
I'm just trying to verify which is the correct method I guess. Maybe it's the scientist in me that frowns upon that sort of calculation
They said they aren't charging me for picking up the keys on the third because they acknowledge they are closed on weekends. How many times do I have to point that out? I'm not asking about that anymore since they said the did not charge for the 3rd. If you must, pretend I picked up the keys the fourth... I'm not asking for things to be "pro-rated by the hour" - I think I have a perfectly legitimate question, no need to be sarcastic.
AGAIN, I'm asking:
Rent is $1050 a month, divide that by 30 days, and that's $35 per day.
Their method: I lived in the unit for 28 days in May, so 28 days X $35/day = $980.
I though it should be $945 because it's subtracting 3 days from the month.
My method: If their month is 30 days, then it's 30 days minus 3 days not lived in.
3 days x $35 per day is $105. $1050-$105 = $945.
I mean to me it's weird to divide by 30 days (this part I understand) but then charge based on 31 total days in the month... Shouldn't the "denominator" be the same 30?
Just to add, based on their method, say I had moved in on the 2nd of May, then my "prorated" rent for the June would be $1050 because I lived in the unit 30 days out of 31? You see why that's not working? It should be the subtraction method based on the 30 day formula.
They said they aren't charging me for picking up the keys on the third because
they acknowledge they are closed on weekends.
And you could have waited until after the weekend.
You are presumed to have preferred to have access over the weekend.
The shot clock starts when you get the ball.
