You should contact your local housing department for the rules.

If you have a casework ask them or ask the leasing manager/landlord of the unit you want to rent.

In my area 2 bedroom units are allowed 4 people max but section 8 might have different rules.

If you're talking about Section 8, it depends on a bunch of different factors, and especially how much income you have for how many people. I tried to understand how they come up with the amount they award people, and I couldn't figure it out to save my life.

The number of bedrooms you will be approved for also depends on how many are in your family. But, Katie1 is right. You'll probably need to talk to the housing authority and the management might be able to give you a ballpark figure.

Here in CA, my income is SSI $890/month, and my portion of the rent in a very tiny studio in a senior building is $197. I think the base rent is around $380 (without the voucher). So, even the 30% of income isn't correct for my situation (many say your rent will be 30% of your income). My rent is less than 30%, so you can't rely on that formula either.

You apply, then get accepted eventually, then you go to a seminar where they "explain" how it all works, which nobody can understand LOL, then you finally get your voucher letter that tells you how much rent you'll have to pay, and how expensive a rental you can shop for (if you're not already somewhere they'll accept your voucher).

Here, anyway, you can not opt to pay a higher rent out of your own pocket until you have lived in a Section 8 unit for 1 year. After they see you can handle that, then they'll let you look for a more expensive unit, and pay out of pocket - up to a certain amount that they will tell you.

In other words, you won't know until you're approved. Good luck.
