I have a sublease on a room in NY. My roommate told me today that they are moving by the end of this month, therefore, I have to move as well. The sublease was written that I have to pay 2 months security + 1 month rent to move in (the lease was for 4 months, ending on July 31st).

A month after we were reviewing the lease and realized that I only paid 1 month security and 1 month rent. We then made a verbal agreement that I would make payments to pay off the other half of the security. I've paid $150 so far.

Since they are moving, he told me that he will only give me back the $150 since I failed to pay the full security. I feel that I am entitled to the portion of security I paid on my move in date. Could they hold my security based on this? What are my options?

I have until Sept 6th.

It's not the $150 I'm concerned about. It's the $800 in total that I'm owed. I need that to move, especially with my savings depleted from paying off my student loans. I just payed them rent the first of the month. He could have told me then.

NEVER count on what you are owed for moving expenses. You can have your student loans adjusted, consolidated or defered if you can not pay them. As far as what your roomies are doing to you I would contact the real LL about it. They may not even be allowed to sublet if they made a "verbal agreement" with you. Are you sure you did not pay it already? I would check my accounts on that one. This person is scamming you for thier moving money most likely.
