They say inflation is flat. Three years ago my SS could get me through the month. My rent increases each year. Food in costing more. Utility costs have increased. Gas has doubled Since Obama has taken office. If inflation is flat how come I'm falling short about two hundred dollars a month compared to three years ago. I'm seventy four and I can't go much further. I've maxed all my credit and soon will be eating dog food. I hope someone is working on this.

I don't think anyone is saying inflation is flat now. Most experts are predicting a COLA increase for Social Security for 2012. For the sake of all those in your shoes, I hope they are right.

As an aside, concernng the rent increases - real estate markets are local, and other localities may be experiencing flat, or nearly flat, rental rates. I know this doesn't help you, but it just illustrates the complexity of doing things on a national scale.

There is no profit in helping the elderly so the Tea Party will never go for it. We are lucky Social Security still exists, they will starve it out of existence like they are doing to the Post Office. Cost of Living Increase, hahahahaha

Now I get it. How did I miss it in the first place? The Tea Party invented cell phones and they, not Al Bore, also invented the Internet for the sole purpose of drying up the Postal Service. Clever lot, ain't they?

National rents have been going up on average since the housing crisis. Its natural as many can not get a loan;many are not buying if they can and others are losing their homes.I would guess in some markets losing population it might be stable or reduced.

VictorD, have you applied for food stamps? It is based on income and necessary expenses. Aside from eating dogfood - which, btw, is quite expensive - there are ways to help you cut your grocery bill without cutting quality. Do you belong to a senior center? If so, many have low cost meals, you just have to go there. But doing that is likely to end up with you making a friend or two or more, so just be prepared. The seniors I know are quite active even on a limited income. I know one woman who just turned 91 and she belongs to two bowling leagues! She looks fantastic, I would never have guessed she was over 75. My best friend is 68 and she's often mistaken for a woman in her 50s. She bikes 2 miles a day, every day and another friend is my age and she runs 5 miles 3 times a week. So get out and join us oldsters! and save some money while you're at it.

Take advantage of senior shopping days - in this area, it's Tuesdays at the pharmacy stores like CVS and Walgreens and 2 of the supermarkets. The others are on Wednesday. There's also a program at Walgreen's to show your soc sec card and you get an extra discount once a month. My friend and I have to ASK for the senior discounts at many places and you might need to do so also. Don't be shy - ASK.

The Tea Party has no control over the determination of Social Security COLA's, and neither does the Social Security Administration. By law, a COLA must be given if there has been inflation according to specific formulas of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Even Congress and the President have no control over this process unless they were to change the law. I also despise the Tea Party, but your resentment of it seems to have escaped the bounds of reason and factuality and crossed over into paranoia. Let's see in a couple of more months if they announce a Social Security COLA for 2012.

If not for the insane pension vesting requirements the Congress forced onto the Post Office it would be operating at a profit
One more manufactured crises to destroy America

Its Obama's post master who wants to cut days to fund the shortfall in pernsion payment coming next summer. perhaps you want the pension nt to be funded or post office to go under? Its Obama remmeebr who cut 500 billion from medicare to fund other subsidised healthcare .Its alos those who will reform SS to save it for future generations ;after all its not just those retored who it owes payments to altho mnay act likeit. You'd be bettert offf listenig to the trustees when they reported that listening to politicans as to what is likely goig to happen if not reformed.
