Retirees: what do you know about Smart Meters? (years, benefit, raise)

I personally believe it is better to be safe than sorry. EMF's are real and have real effects on the body.
If you are the type of person who is sick and takes meds and is pro Smart Meters, you might want to reconsider your whole game plan.
On the other hand, if you eat healthy, are mostly well, and avoid medications and try to "live clean," you might not be a good candidate for a Smart Meter.
I'm 65, retired and I LOVE my smart meter. I can now check my energy usage hourly/daily/weekly online (within two days of usage). I can also compare my energy usage to that of others in my neighborhood (to help me figure out how to conserve energy). I've had my smart meter for four months and appreciate it more every day.
Smart meters are NOT health hazards. That rumor was probably started by some company that will lose out, financially, by the introduction of smart meters. There have been a few reports of fires when they were installed incorrectly but they werent the fault of the smart meter.
Edited to add that, although I can check my usage against my neighbors' usage, no one's identity is revealed. I see only a chart showing my collective neighbors' average use.
How do you check your neighbor's usage? Online, or do you sneak up to their house in the middle of the night?
How do you "figure out how to conserve energy" by knowing what your neighbor uses??
Mine was installed in June. They have been controversial here in Las Vegas because of health issues and a general dislike of NVEnergy. They get a constant stream of rate hikes and their latest ploy is asking for increases because people are conserving too much.
I haven't noticed any difference in my health or sense of well-being since it arrived.
Make that a lead hat, or how about wearing your cast iron kettle upside down on your head while your read the real literature about this potential hazard?

I realize that I'm not going to change the minds of any nay-sayers and those who fear any advances in technology. To those people my suggestion is just keep your old meters. Those of us who arent stuck in that mindset can enjoy the benefits of the smart meters.

I don't have a smart meter and if I did and it gave me usage charts it still wouldn't change my daily usage one iota......

So now in America the mantra is no longer keep up with the Joneses but degrade to the Jonses???
Omygoodness, get a grip. The comparison chart shows my usage compared to the usages of those in houses the same size as mine. If I see that those homes are using 25% less energy than I am, it's a wakeup call to me. On the other hand, I've installed energy-efficient windows and other energy-saving devices and I like to see how much energy I'm really saving compared to similar homes that dont have them. If you want to make fun of me for being energy-conscious, go ahead.
My account lets me see the comparison chart so, if necessary, I can then review options on how to reduce my energy usage.
