Why is it that Social Security benefits are always at risk? .... Yet, one never hears that Welfare benefits are in danger of being reduced or eliminated???
But they should just increase the FRA to 70 and be done with it. And, no more borrowing from SSA.
It would be very hard for a lot of 65 to 70 year olds to keep a job. Most employers don't want them after late 50's anymore. Besides, who wants to work 50+ years?
My guess that this is propaganda and scare tactics to get the debt ceiling raised. They're insinuating that the government won't be able to borrow the funds in order to pay the bonds SSA holds and might need to pay out. It may be true, but that's only because they want to use it for political purposes.

The house has passed two debt prioritization bills in the last year that would have made this a non-issue but the senate and administration is not interested. This is more of the same from the bureaucrats that want to spend without limits and will threaten one emergency or another to get their way.

One never hears what one is not interested in hearing. As a former poverty attorney, I remain interested in the well being of all Americans, including those who rely on government help for subsistence. So, for example, I was already aware that Congress cut benefits from the SNAP (food stamp) program and those reductions will take effect November 1st. Somehow I doubt the WSJ provided substantial coverage of that reduction !
That said, there are a lot of willfully ignorant Americans out there considering we are rapidly approaching the debt ceiling. Oh hell, let's be honest. Most Americans don't even know what the debt ceiling is, let alone the process by which Treasury pays the nation's bills. Seems to me, the only way the Administration can get its message out is to let Social Security recipients know that it is possible on any given day (depends on daily receipt of revenues and bills) that some checks may not be able to go out. Indeed, it looks like that minor detail caught your attention, eh?

Why? Older people vote and put pressure on the their representatives in Congress. They are the ones who need to be scared into contacting their congressperson. It's all political BS.
