Background:
We are acquaintances and know this gentlemen from a small group we are involved in from our church. Very nice person; he was self employed (builder); even though he may entertain a small job here or there, I think technically he is retired. Seems to do fine; healthy; intelligent; large family home.

We are stumped on gift ideas. We need to take something. I don't think he's the gag gift type; I was thinking a book or a gift certificate to a restaurant but not sure.

We don't want to overdo - some in our group do well; some are OK; some struggle financially, I think.
Mix of people also

It's an afternoon party and it's not a surprise.

When I asked my husband, he laughed when I asked him what HE would want. He is also not sure.

I thought people here (men maybe) might have some good ideas for me.

Personally, I have always requested NO gifts. I feel very uncomfortable receiving expensive gifts from people when I have all that I can need. At least, that is my take on it.

Just want to be prepared.

Years ago, I was at one of these and I had no clue. It was all gag stuff but the birthday guy was totally embarrassed - it was his admin assistant who set it up - he was the president of the company. He was a class act and tried to act like it was funny but I know he was seething inside. It was not his idea.

Gift care to the bookstore! (Couldn't decide between book and gift card)

What is a good amount? As low as $25? Or should it be $65 b/c of the year?

Does he have Whiskey Stones? You put them in the freezer and use them instead of ice so it chills but does not dilute your good booze.

A local couple just moved to their retirement home and we had the same problem. What do you get someone who needs nothing but you think going empty-handed is bad manners? We bought them expensive chocolates. They could have frozen them but the thank you card said they would not admit how fast all the chocolates were gone.

Maybe you can find a box of 65 chocolates.
