^^^^^ I share your jaundiced eye for all those lists, but to be fair, the better lists always include the criteria by which the choices are made. Now maybe the criteria themselves are not well thought through and maybe the resulting choices seem a bit bizarre, but we are all going to have our own criteria and we are all going to weight them differently.

Be careful of New Hampshire. At least in the southern/mid part, the property taxes are higher than anywhere else in New England. No sales or income tax, but balance that all out.

Everyone has their own idea of criteria for making selection. Might as well be 'random'

We chose Maine and after nine years we are still very happy with our choice.

I'm sure this list will provoke considerable debate. However I claim that it is at least as good as any other "Best 10" list.

It will be no surprise to anyone that Iowa came in last.

1. Kentucky
2. New Hampshire
3. Montana
4. Mississippi
5. Idaho
6. Arkansas
7. Wyoming
8. Maine
9. Arizona
10. Texas
It is as good as any other list because you stated how you selected your top ten and the reasons why. While being none that becomes the basis for discussion and participants adding feedback. I think I have at some point seen all of the states in a top ten list for a variety of reasons. That leads be to believe that depending on your goals and situation every state is good for someone.

I don't trust their random number generator, so I made my own more reliable list:

1. West Virginia
2. Arizona
3. Flolrida
4. Arkansas
5. Missouri
6. Massachusetts
7. Kedntucky
8. Nebraska
9. Minnesota
10. Louisiana

Next question: How did this four old thread show up on my menu of topics?

And then: When I look at my browser history, this page is not listed as having been visited recently.

I was wondering the same thing. I am thinking maybe there was a spam reply so it got resurrected but in the time you were replying the spam was noted and deleted?
The internet works strangely at time.
Anyway I like random. So it's a random list and random menu offering.

Some of those published lists use sources that are not uniform in their collection and tabulation across state lines. That’s pretty sloppy analysis...but they will tell you that they are using “the best data available”. Maybe the criteria is worthless if you can’t guarantee that the data are uniformly generated. These lists are all about selling advertising — that’s it.
