I posted this in the Moving Forum but I want to get retirees like me to tell me what they would do. We moved to FL last year and it was a disaster. This time I won't HAVE to work. I know exactly what I want living wise. Secluded, private so I can have my chickens and maybe take in a few rescues, not just chickens..other animals in need. North Central FL. Any help for me or nice suggestions ???

Ocala area. Lots of vacant land there.
Just make sure it's agricultural zoned.

We would make great neighbors, tarajane. I'm thinking along the same lines!

Luv is correct about checking. I saw something in Umatilla that seemed rural enough, but it had restrictions.

My luck I'd move into a county area that gets annexed by a city intent on development. That happened to me years ago in SoFl.

I've noticed folks with chickens, horses etc off of 450/452. Also, on the Emeralda Marsh area (Lisbon, etc) I've noticed folks with llamas, alpacas, goats. I like the marsh and all its wild native vegetation.

Tarajane, I reearched the Ocala, Morriston, Dunellon and surrounding areas. It depends on how rural you want to be, and how close you need services. If you are healthy you will be fine. How close do you want to be to a good ER?

I initially started looking outside of Alachua county in Live Oak, Mayo, etc. Mom wanted us closer than five hours from Miami so it was a no go.

union county ,florida they basically don"t care what you do or have out here in the sticks, especially around the lake butler area. that is the truth and 95% of what you build or add on or basically anything , does not require any permits

I know you as an independent thinker, so I am a bit surprised that you would let your mother dictate your location to that extent. Moving from upstate New York to Florida, anywhere in Florida, is moving most of the way to Miami. Yes, I know Florida is a large state, and it's a heck of a distance from, say, Pensacola to Miami. So your mother's preference doesn't surprise me, but your acquiescence in it did a little bit. Of course you have the right to, and you absolutely should, set your own priorities. Making your mother satisfied in her old age is not a bad priority.
