Stupid question. Do I absolutely need to make an appointment or can I just walk in to my local office to apply for SS benefits?

If you walk in you will likely wait a long time to be served. But it's worth a try.

Can't you just apply online? That's what I did, and then some guy called me the next day and I verified a few things. Done.

Yes you can apply online. We did and never went to any office. A friend applied on line and they needed an original of birth certificate or marriage license, he didn't have to wait in line, went to the window to sign in and they asked what he was there for, made a copy, went home.

Nine years ago I walked into an office and applied without an appointment. The wait was reasonable - 30 or 40 minutes. At the time I didn't know one could apply online.

If all I have to do is bring in a couple of items in to be copied and it only will take a few minutes then I would apply online. What I don't want to have to do is apply online and then have to mail in copies of a number of items like birth certificate yada yada. I went to a local office when I was given some mis info a few months back with an appointment and still waited close to an hour. If the weather holds up Friday here in NJ I might just hop into a local office since I only work half a day.

You can also do it over the phone. When I called for an appointment, they took a lot of my information, but I wanted to talk with someone in person and when she asked if I just wanted to go ahead and apply I said no I wanted the appointment. When I went in I only had to wait about 5 minutes and the lady gave us all sorts of information. She looked at our cards and other information she pulled up online and finished the application. She gave us a packet of papers and a pre-registration for an online account. I think I got some useful information by going in.

It was peace of mind for me to do it the way I did. I did register both of us online for our medicare and it was pretty easy. Only thing, when I called to make the appointment, I think I was on hold longer than it took to get in at the appointment! I'd say whatever you're more comfortable with.
