Millions of retirees say they will never fully recover from financial losses during the Great Recession, new data show. Yet the vast majority say they are happy. That's not as contradictory as it may sound. For most retirees, having the time to do what they want is far more satisfying than having money to live well.
Someone in another thread commented that one can never have too much money, and that is true up to a point. But one can, in fact, have too much money. Consider the late Michael Jackson. He had so much money that he needed accountants and various managers to keep track and manage things, xo he lost control of his own life. Also, in his situation he never knew if people wanted to be his friend because they liked him or because of his fame and wealth. That would be a hell of a way to live, always wondering if people were sincere in the way they were reacting to you. He was absolutely miserable by all accounts. Now I am not claiming he was miserable only because of his fabulous wealth, as there were other factors involved, not the least of which was his childhood.
Beyond a certain level (and that level is different for all of us) more money brings dimishing returns and does not add to the quality of life. For me that level is right where I am now. I can travel if I want, I can indulge myself in certain little luxuries, I can have a beer with lunch or dinner if I feel like it when eating out, and I have a car which, although not high-end, is more than low-end. I don't want to live like royalty - I don't think I would even like it.
Money helps. My moneyed friend with stage 3B non-smokers lung cancer is currently cancer free due to her cutting edge, personally tailored to her genes chemotherapy. It doesn't come cheap.
NYC is in a class by itself. Around here, that much money would make you very well off.
