Being retired has some advantages but being old, I can't think of any.
I should be relaxed and have peace of mind because I don't have a care in the world. I am retired!
I go to bed and every night I sleep terrible. I wake constantly and have to go to the bathroom twice a night. Since I retired I have never slept more than six hours. (Yes, I have been to the doctor, many of them.)
I remember when I was young. I would sleep at least eight hours and deeply and feel great.
Is sleeping for eight hours straight a pipe dream for up older people?

I take it you're a guy? Sometimes you can take meds if it's a prostate issue...otherwise I'd say start an exercise program and develop a bedtime routine that is the same every night in terms of same time to bed, maybe a warm shower, no electronics after 8:00, etc.
I haven't slept for 8 hours since I was 6. If you're getting up that often you're either drinking too much right before going to bed or you should have your prostate checked.
Sorry you're having trouble with sleeping. I've heard that needing less sleep is common with aging, but that sure doesn't apply to me. While I was working, I had so much going on that I normally got "only" about 8 hours of sleep each night. Now that I'm retired, I usually sleep 10 to 12 hours straight each night. I think that's a lot compared to most people, but I felt sleep-deprived all the years that I worked, and I guess that many hours is my "normal." I'm glad I can indulge in sleeping as long as I want to, now.
I've never slept eight hours without waking up at least once. Come to think of it, I've never slept eight hours. I just wake up when I wake up now that I don't have an alarm clock ruling my life. It's one of the many perks of retirement.
Since you are retired you can go to bed when you want and let your body decide when to wake up.
Do you feel tired on waking?
Try and get some physical exertion enough to make you tired.
Alcohol definitely gives sleeps interruptus haha :-)
If you don't feel tired then why worry?
I get less sleep than when younger but it seems natural.
There are some good over the counter sleep aids to try but my spouse thinks he feels woozy from them, they have no aftereffect for me and give 8 hours sleep.
I sleep average 8.5 hours a night and take a nap in the early afternoon. I'm busy all the time I am awake, only watch TV for the news in the morning and then after dinner. On the other hand my wife has a terrible time sleeping. She says I could sleep on a rock.
