Love Las Cruces!

Yea don't think that exists. Lol

I live in a very small south Texas town and I could probably go to the ATM late at night without incident, but years of safety training being drilled into my head, just would not do it.

Los Alamos, New Mexico! Of course, it's at over 8000 feet elevation so gets a little cold in the winter and they roll up the sidewalks at 7 pm. But not a lot of scientists lurking in the dark near ATM machines.

I love TwoByFour. He gives me GREAT advice on money matters but I have an English degree and you are wrong. An opinion of something being contradictory does not make it contradictory. Everyone understands what he meant but technically speaking, luvhorses is right.

I'm from Munster, Indiana and I used to go to the ATM at all hours. I also walked my dog 3-5 miles beginning at 11p during the summer. I never felt like I was going to get bothered. I feel the same thing where I'm at now but I can't walk in the dark bc I live off a 45 mph road and little lighting. I'm sure there are other suburban/semi rural areas that are like that. I know of quite a few in the Midwest but the weather isn't mild.

Western NC is full of retirees, and the weather, while not the definition of mild, is definitely enjoyable. If it does snow, it doesn't last that long.
We have a lot of Floridians who stay the summer here, then move back to FL for the winter. A lot of them who used to do that, have decided to stay full time and love it.

You seem to be confused. It is not a matter of whether the terms are actually contradictory or not. In other words, it is not a matter of whether TwoByFour or Luvhorses is correct about such a place existing or not. What I addressed is whether TwoByFour correctly understood the meaning of the term "oxymoron". He did understand it correctly and he used it correctly to make his point.

If you wish to argue that no, it was not really an oxymoron because such places can actually be found, that is fine. But that is beside the point of my post. I know what an oxymoron is as well as you do, despite your degree in English, and apparently TwoByFour does too. The whole point is that Luvhorses questioned whether he knew the meaning of the term.

I guess it all depends on your definition of "mild climate". We moved to east Tennessee, it has a 4 season climate, usually gets one or two days of snow (2" or so) per year. We have temps in the low 90's on some days and some humidity in the summer, but it's more like in the 60% range at it's peak, not the 90% of Florida and the other gulf coast states. I have a low tolerance for high humidity, and I can tolerate the worst days. Hey that's what A/C and swimming is for, right?

Our crime is very much "area specific". In our quiet, ungated community (3500 homes) we have only a handful of crimes per year, mainly property crimes such as vandalism and the rare burglary. The state as a whole looks like it has a high crime rate, but the crimes are clustered around a few urban areas. We walk the golf course at night with our dog right up until bedtime. I have no fear of going anywhere in our community at any hour. In nearby towns and cities, the usual safety precautions apply that you would use in any city or town.

Homes here range from just under $200k to a couple mil. There are a few gated communities nearby also, if that's what you're looking for.

Crime stats get skewed high when an area is an attraction for weekenders at the lake for example as is the case here. The weekend population swells due to part timers adding property crime exposures. But the stat on crime is generally number of incidents per year per people. People is the full time residents. So comparing crime rates between locations when one has a big part time or tourist population not shown in the census population figures.

If this area would work for you, go to a forum and ask residents about crime. It is a nice safe area from my experience and nd those of people I know living there. Durant has same tourism situation as well as a college with students most of whom are part timers. There is drug as in methadon along the river but my family living there and nit frequenting these areas has never seen any crime over nearly 90 years there.
