Dang people, fill out your check first, or at least have the dang checkbook out! No, don't be having a conversation with the cashier about the damn Broncos game! I had nothing better to do, but nothing was always better than being in that line.

Ran by the grocery store today for a a few things and got behind the "old man in the express lane." Cane stuck in the grocery cart and using the cart as a de-facto walker. Fumbling with the credit card reader and getting those "knowing glances." All I could think about was my Dad.

Grocery store line patience problem: gone.

Being a cashier I see this every day. The eye rolling, the 'sighs' and the impatience of other customers. I just want to tell them that, if they are lucky, they will be old someday and have people be impatient with them too!

As for me, I get impatient with people who can never accept personal responsibility for anything or keep complaining about things with a simple 'fix' but they can't be bothered. And liars!

I also have to fight the impulse to be irritated by the even older folk whose hearing is probably damaged, and who don't sense that I am right behind them while they stand transfixed in the middle of a grocery aisle. This happens all the time. As people get older, they seem to lose awareness of approaching people. I think part of it is hearing loss. As any rate, it always annoys me. But getting annoyed does no on any good. I'm working on this stuff.
... The bolded part of silibran's post isn't only for older folks, though. I see it every day in my work environment, too.
I work in the tech industry where there are lots of young people, moving around (or not moving, in this case) in hallways, restrooms, coffee-break areas, and even outdoors in the smoking area. These "youngsters" are all so entranced with whatever's-so-important on their phones that they stop moving wherever they are; they're "roadblocks" in the middle of the halls, and especially on the stairways.
When I encounter them, I'm (usually) a "man on a mission" to somewhere to assist someone, and find myself dodging and weaving around people. It can be exasperating , if you're in a hurry.
We've seen the same thing happening when we're shopping, too (of course), but I wouldn't confine the problem to just older folks.
The "reasons" for not moving are different; the effect is the same ...

I know that, once I fully-retire, I'm going to have to learn to become even more patient than I've had to learn to do, already.

I see what I call 'mom syndrome' in grocery stores all the time. Young women who push their carts down the middle of the aisle, stopping along the way to read ingredients, paying no attention to who they're holding up. I think they may be in the habit of doing this when they have a child in the cart prone to grabbing things, without thinking to pull to the side when there isn't a child in the cart.

It's nice that you are so tolerant and patient. However, I question whether people who are inconsiderate of others should get a pass just because they are old. And it is highly inconsiderate to pull out a checkbook only after the total is rung up. (Why someone would still be paying by check in this day and age is another discussion, but at least have the check mostly written by the time the total comes up.)

They do this at the register too. We have bag carousels at our registers so I can move to the next bag easily BUT there are some mom's who flat refuse to move their cart THREE inches so the kid can't keep grabbing and turning the thing! They'll tell them not to do that...several times...and the kid just keeps on. I have been known to just STOP until they control the kid but I am SO tempted to tell them, "Move the kid three inches!!". lol

I haven't read through the whole thread so forgive me if this has already been mentioned....
ROBO CALLS! I'm on the No Call directory but get junk calls daily. I ask them to take my name off of their list, I report them, but the calls just keep on coming! Nothing is ever done and it just gets worse.

Maybe after Trump gets done fixing health care, the employment, the border, taxes, and terrorism, he can focus his attention on something really important...ROBO CALLS

Yes, I agree, we should all be prepared at the register and be able to get out ASAP. But that's just not going to happen all the time. I don't think it even enters people's minds that they are being "inconsiderate". They are just doing things the way 'they' do them. For instance, it's not necessary to fill out a check at my store. The blank check goes through the reader, gets filled in, sign on the card reader, done. But, no, they have to fill it out because "that's how I do it", or "I'll forget how much it is"...even though they will have the receipt in their hand and check printed out. Okay.

How about the ones who need every bag double bagged and then they have to tie them all shut before they go into the cart? If I see them start doing this I will do it for them as I go! I will also put all their stuff in their cart WHILE they are swiping their card or writing their check. I tell them they were 'busy' and I wasn't and I'm glad to help. I just want them done so I can get on to the next one! I also do it because I don't want them leaving anything behind so a last turn of the carousel is good!

I get impatient with shrieking children in every store I go to. I love children, I had children, but I'm over pretending to have interest in other people's children. This also goes for other people's pets...no, I don't want to hear about the cute thing your cat did yesterday.

I have lost patience for clothes shopping. I don't want to wade through a rack of garments trying to put an outfit together. Either sell me the whole outfit off a mannequin or else I'll just buy outfits online from stores whose clothing fits me.

You sound like a very efficient and caring person! Wish there were more people this kind...

Ignorance and stupidity/the lack of desire to learn. It's truly reaching epidemic level....
