She's NUTS! No way would I want to be "responsible" for a job until age 70: driving in traffic every day, living by the clock, a bunch of crap from child bosses who "put up" with me. I see no dignity in that at all. She can HAVE IT! I'll take my minimal SS at 62-64 and try to live the rest of my life in a peaceful setting, walking my dogs and planning & planting beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. I'll write for myself - about anything and everything that strikes me. If I want to sit out all night looking at the stars, that's what I'll do INSTEAD of hearing the alarm go off at 5:30 in the morning.
Now all this might be idealistic - but I simply DON'T CARE. That's what I want. I don't have the travel bug; don't care about "fine dining"; don't need a Broadway show or evening-wear or a country club. I want to be "schedule-free" with the exception of volunteering for an animal shelter and/or teens at risk. Sure, I'll lose money. So what? The comparison between money and freedom is, iMO, incomparable.
Work until 70?
That won't be happening...I don't see the point, when the pension and SS by themselves will cover my expenses - the 401K and other savings are just icing on the cake.
The one size fits all approch always fails for most. Sure taking SS at 62 is stupid for most, but not all. My retiring at 66 was smart physically and mentally. Money isn’t everything.
She can retire at 70. I'm doing it at 62 and I don't give a rat's behind about what she says unless she wants to take over my job for me. She can have it and work until she drops.
Yes, soulsurv, I have similar thoughts. My coworkers and I and were saying recently that human beings just weren't meant to sit in a cubicle for 8 hours a day.
Thanks, matisse; I appreciate the encouragement! Funny: when I turned 60, I just started saying anything I felt. My late Mother did the same - which, of course, MORTIFIED me at the time! "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree," I guess .
I'm seriously considering going until 70 even though I probably don't need to. i like my job though. It would solve a lot of "what ifs". I stopped watching Suze when she kept insisting that loans taken out against 401ks ended up getting double taxed. I did learn about IRS tax code 72t from her so there is that.
