Looking for a rural area to retire where we can get a small house with property, 1 acre, inexpensive(under $250k), within 1 hr from an airport, shopping within 1/2 hr, low crime rate, nice downtown would be a plus. Not looking for a over 55 community. We looked at Summerville last year because it came up on the retirement lists but it was much too congested.
If you retired in South Carolina tell me what’s good about your town. Thanks

There are areas near Greenville that might be a good fit for you. You might get better responses by posting in the SC Forum.

Maybe take a look at Landrum in the upcountry near the NC border; town of about 2500. 30 minutes to Spartanburg and about 45 or so to Greenville or Asheville NC. It was one of the finalists on our list of places to retire. In the foothills, but in 10 minutes or so you can be 1000 ft higher up in Saluda NC

Check out Travelers Rest or Easley. We live in a suburb of Greenville, SC and love it. We retired here four years ago.

We seriously considered Cliffs Glassy in Landrum, but too remote. Ended up buying in Flat Rock.

I like Flat Rock. Been to the Sandburg home a few times. Definitely a good workout walking up to the house!

Look in the Northern West corner of the state. Near the NC boarder.

I concur WildePeanut with these two answers. I have friends who have relocated to this region as well. It is not off our list should we decide to relocate. We have not decided yet.

We summer in Flat Rock. The Sandburg home grounds is one of my favorite places to go walking. Go see the goats, walk up to the flat rocks, stretch out and meditate a while.

I'd recommend someplace outside Greenville if you have your heart set on South Carolina. It's a little too hot for me in the summer, but otherwise I do like the Greenville area..
