Jo Anne Butler, 69, and Ray Ball, 72, of Prescott, Ariz., were killed in their Bahia de los Angeles home, about 380 miles south of the U.S. border on the Gulf of California.
Neighbors believe they were shot while trying to prevent the theft of a 22 ft fishing boat from their property.
Happens in developing countries more often than reported. Returning residents of those countries are often the targets due to jealousy over what they are perceived to have in their homes.
It's sad but it happens. Personally, I would never want to live somewhere where I am looked at as an American with money, probably as a foreign elitist by the locals no matter what country it is.
You may not think of yourself as a wealthy American, but by their standards, you are.
I often see/read of US people who have retired to Mexico (in places like Chapala, etc.) and give happy stories. However, my best friend of 36 years, who is from Mexico, thinks that they are living in a dream - i.e., it is way too dangerous. I know other people from Mexico who say it is safe, but also I know others (Mexican citizens) who have had home invasions and car-jackings. So ... to my mind, there is enough uncertainty that I would not want to retire there.
In response to this thread, I posted a link to a news article about a similar botched robbery and murder of a retired couple in Georgia as a facetious warning to people considering retiring to Georgia.
For some completely illogical reason that made no sense whatsoever, that thread was moved to Current Events.
I'm not sure why the murder of a retired couple in a small town in Georgia is a "current event" but the murder of a retired couple in Mexico that has made national news apparently is not.

We have tossed around the idea of retiring to another country, but have come to the conclusion that w/events like this, and the often unpredictable nature of some governments, we'll take our chances here. Nothing like packing up everything and moving somewhere to live cheaply, to have some crazed junta thing go down and the government seizes your property and/or assets, OR this type of situation. How sad. Uh Uh. There are 50 states in these United States. I can find somewhere to live and if I budget properly I can live within my means. BTW. I've been to Mexico many times, and I would not go back. Sure, there are pockets of great beauty and many places probably ARE safe, but for the most part, it's a sh*t hole, IMO. (please, no hate mail
I'm often amazed, on these international house hunting shows, how Americans seem not to notice walls around the property or bars on the windows. They're probably there for a reason! I wouldn't want to be that neighbor everyone resents, either...
