Recall well into the 1980's people got together (lunch clubs, Friday or Saturday nights, Knights of Columbus or other halls) and played cards. Bridge, Pishe Pasha, Gin, Hearts, War (really big with us kids), Pinochle and so forth. Seemed a nice way to pass the time and or get competitive as people wished.
Guess now with television and other distractions other than Poker do people still have card game "nights" or just get together and play?
My husband and I would if we could find anyone to play with.
With my ex-husband, we would go to his parents once a week and play some kind of card game (usually canasta), and we actually enjoyed it! (Even though we were in our late 20's and they were in their early 60's)
I really miss playing cribbage. I need to go find someone to play with me. There are game board nights at the local libraries. I need to go find some cribbage players. Our family played it and it was a good way to teach the kids math. Not too sophisticated, like chess or other really involved strategic games, so it doesn't require a really advanced mathematical mind.
Well one thing about card playing seemingly falling out of fashion is you can pick up folding card tables (remember those?) at very good prices. This even for some really nice pieces of good wood furniture.
Use them like my parents and other family members did back in the day; excellent "kids tables" for Thanksgiving and other large meal events. That and when otherwise having a crowd in and need extra table space.

Think as a kid/younger person that is what put me off bridge; it required too much thinking, especially contract bridge. *LOL*
Of course playing poker when there is serious money on the table isn't that much different skill/concentration wise.
The community we retired to is very social. There are lots of game groups you can get involved with and new ones starting all the time. I’m actually playing in 3 ladies Hand & Foot groups and just joined a new couples Euchre group. I grew up playing cards, so I’m having fun and think it’s a much more enjoyable way to spend an afternoon or evening than sitting on the couch watching TV. I particularly enjoy the ones that involve appetizers and wine!
I still play cards at "game day" established by the Methodist Church. Let me tell you: those ladies are competitive!
