I wanted to do three things on my online Social Security account today, all of which are described in their promotions as being available to do: 1. To change my phone number 2. To change my Direct Deposit information 3. To request a new Social Security card.

When I went to each section and followed the instructions that were provided, the only options offered were to call by phone or to visit a local office. The "Edit" buttons that were described in the instructions, did not exist. Do other people have this same problem? Has it always been this way with online accounts or is it a temporary fault?

Changing Direct deposit information over a phone is not something I want to do, as four long account and routing numbers have to be given, from both the new and prior banks. There's too much chance for a number to be exchanged incorrectly, which would sabotage the payment process.

Just guessing, but did you just recently get access to your online account? Maybe there’s a waiting period to be able to make changes.

When I filed for SS, I was able to do the whole thing online. A friend of mine couldn’t.

I've tried twice in the last five or seven days to login, and both times the system was not functioning - it would not move.

I seem to recall they only allow access during business hours for some reason.

Try again tomorrow. Maybe they were having problems with their system today.

I just went to SSA online and logged in. When I did, it asked me if they had the right phone number. It then showed me an option to request a new card. I then went to my profile and can see where I can change my banking info.

I just logged in and I had the opportunity to update my phone number and other personal data and change direct deposit info. However, I could not request a new SS card:

*******Social Security Card Replacement
We're sorry. We cannot process your request.

You cannot request a replacement card online.

Please contact your local office if you need a replacement card.*******

So stupid. Why do they even give that option. It should say to request a new card you have to go to your local office.

Apparently what they don't say upfront is that "getting a new card" is NOT available in ALL states.

"Who is eligible to request a replacement Social Security card online?

Requesting a replacement card online is available in most states. We are continuously working to make this service available to additional states."

See https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/replacement-card.html for this and other restrictions.

Well, according to the map on that page, I live in a state that is colored blue. Yet, I must go to a local office to procur a new card. Go figure!
