I would buy a house or condo at the shore. I could sit on my porch or balcony and watch the storms roll in.

I remember that program and a million back then was a astronomical amount of money. I'm a millionaire now and I was a hourly employee all my life.

Note I just hit 4,000 posts.

I would probably pay off my car and my house and daughter’s college loan. Take a few trips and occasionally rent a quiet place on the beach. Support a few charities or causes. Not much else. You almost need more to make a huge difference, or that’s what we think.

I like your plan. The only addition I'd make is the occasional fruity adult beverage.

Question for the OP: I’m guessing that in the show the money often led to more problems rather than to benefits?

I think I would give it to my favorite charities.

Why not watch an episode and see for yourself? There are many complete episodes available on YouTube. Here's one of them starring a young and largely unknown Jack Lord.

I've been retired for 10 years and DH even longer. Nevertheless, I'd be taking that million and investing it. Never know when you're gonna need more.

AND you can still leave it for your kids. or annually gift them the income from the invested million.

And then there was "Queen for a Day". Three or four ladies would get up, narrate a sob story, and the audience would choose the recipient by the applause meter. Get lucky and you might get a washing machine or a trip to see your dying sister. AND the winner got to wear a fur-trimmed robe and a crown and hold an armload of roses for a few minutes.
