But I will say that the one I WANTED mine to be like was The Jetsons! Loved the "tech" ..... Especially Rosie the robot maid. And I'd have loved to be able to have a robot pet, because my mega-allergy to cats and dogs meant I could never have either.
So funny: I was in a local supermarket yesterday and came face to "face" with their newest employee, Marty the Robot. As they are re-decor-ing the Stop & Shop stores they are bringing these in. Marty roams the aisles looking for spills and items that have fallen onto the floor, reports it, and then hangs around to let customers know about the potential hazard until a human employee arrives to take care of it and let Marty resume his rounds.
He's pretty cool. He doesn't interact directly with customers but it would be so neat if he did!
Sorry, the TV metaphor does not work. My family was an odd mix. Normal on the surface but some real dysfunctional areas if you pulled the covers off.
Same. It was a good solid family, but nothing really interesting enough to be a good TV show. 2 boys, 2 girls, parents nice to each other but didn't joke around much.
The families in most of those shows were functioning families on the verge of being perfect. I used to wish that Ward and June Cleaver were my parents...ahhh...but alas
My brother and I were about the same as Wally and the Beav, age-wise. He even looked like Wally. But our parents didn't resemble Ward and June. We were not as affluent as they seemed to be - no pearls at dinner. We always had an old used car and the house was pretty tiny. The kids in the neighborhood were about the same. But, on the other hand, we had a collie dog named Lassie that was older (and wiser) than me. There was no desire or intent to mimic a TV show but it sometimes seemed that they had a camera aimed at our house. My perception was, and still mostly is, that my friends had a fairly similar existence. I'm talking about the period 1953 to about 1968.
Putting this into perspective, the backyard fence in the house where I lived and grew up was the city limit of Ferguson, Missouri, of recent fame and notoriety. It was a very different time.
Does not compute. We didn't have TV when I was a kid. Our 1st B&W set came when I was 19 and there were more interesting things to do. There were 6 channels at that time.
No TV show I watched back then matches, either. TV producers did not make shows about families with different ethnic elements in them, unless you count Desi Arnaz.
Now, take that chapter from the movie Joy Luck Club, in which a young girl plays a piano recital and gets revenge at her parents for making her into a performing monkey, that one made into a TV show would fit.
Other shows I should have listed in the poll options:
- The Brady Bunch (how could I have failed to list this one, even though I never watched it?)
- Bewitched
- Lost In Space
- My Uncle the Martian, or whatever it was called
None of those tv shows. Not a Leave it to Beaver family, not an Archie Bunker family or an I Love Lucy family either. There's an old James Dean movie though, East of Eden. Even though I'm a woman, the kid played by James Dean was like me and the family dynamics were a bit like my own. East of Eden. At least it had a good ending.
Edit: I looked up East of Eden. The movie came from a novel. My family was not like that at all. There was some sibling rivalry and there the resemblance ends.
