Sometimes we fail to pay attention to the wonderful built environment all around Rhode Island. It reminds me of my first visit to San Diego. I couldn't wait to see the city's national register historic district. When I arrived, I was shocked. They had nothing but a few unremarkable Victorian houses on a couple streets. We are so lucky.

As a newbie from the outside it amazes me that many Rhode Islanders cannot see the jewel they have here! Maybe it is a cultural internal modesty reaction when we hear all the complaints about this state from the lifers? I've lived in many places, including beautiful Chicago with 13% unemployment, and can tell you....what you have and the potential of what you can become as a state....is pretty much on the top of all lists out there! Glad to call this state my permanent home!

I agree it is a jewel and find it so interesting contrasting those who thinks Rhode Island and Providence are tops with those who constantly deride the city and state. To generalize, those who don't like RI seem to prioritize low taxes and a minimum of diversity (they probably dislike cities by their very nature). And, as we know low taxes and lots of old white people certainly aren't Providence and increasingly not Rhode Island.

On the other hand, the many world-wide media outlets and those who love RI and Providence seem to prioritize our diversity, culture, beauty and the certain degree of sophistication usually found only in much larger cities. It must be difficult for the naysayers when all of these ratings rank Providence so high and often by extension the entire state. Just the opposite of what they - so desperately - try to portray to newcomers.

No doubt, RI has its serious problems, but let's celebrate what most from the outside see when they examine and compare our wonderful city state with the rest.

In tune with the Architectural Digest article, Providence Preservation Society once again offers its PPS Festival of Historic Houses coming up June 13-15. It will include the Cooke Street Neighborhood on the East Side, and Pearl Street Lofts on the South Side.

Don't miss the opportunity to see these fabulous properties!

Every year i want to attend the PPS tour and every year i miss it. One of these times i'll make the tour.

On another note, there is so much demand in my area right now for contractors in restoration work that people cannot get projects done. I personally know of 2 people looking for full exterior restoration of their second empire homes, have financing, BUT are having a hard time lining up contractors because there is so much demand right now.

I take away 3 things from this....

1 - it's AWESOME to see continued restoration of classic Victorian architecture in the area.
2 - it's great to see investment in the community and things rebounding so quickly in my area (real estate in my area is already close to 2008 levels)
3 - it's a great sign for work when demand is outpacing demand for such a key industry.

As an outsider I think Rhode Island is a wonderful state. I literally don't get why the state get's so much negativity(it has issues, but so do other states and RI certainly isn't in the worst postition).

Another media outlet that appreciates that great city that is Providence :

There are many who support your opinion. The negative Nancys are the loudest and most persistent!! LOL!

Don't miss the PPS tour, it's going to be a good one this year.
