The plan is to tear down the sad Newport Grand Casino. In its place Carpionato Group will build a mix of hotels & apartments in addition to office, medical & retail. That this new $100m project will not have a tourist orientation is interesting. If successful, it will boost Newport with an image as more than a first rate visitor destination. It could be a game changer for the state. Worth watching.

The hotels will be aimed at business clients rather than tourists. The location is not one that would attract tourists. Not a particularly physically attractive spot - as Newport goes.

It's not a tourist area. This is the old jai alai from back in the day. Close to the bridge. Also relatively close to all the housing projects on the Middletown/Newport line.
^True but I imagine there are many tourists on a budget, or last minute planners stuck with few choices, who will grab up any room in "Newport". Especially those who don't really know the area. If this is successful in attracting non-tourist oriented commerce, then yes I imagine it would get business travelers. But in mixed use developments like that, the "offices" are usually last to come along (if ever).

While there may be navy & subsidized housing nearby, the modest single family houses in the direct area sell for upwards of $350 - $500,000. The area is considered desirable. The well kept houses sell quickly.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Raimondo's right hand man, Secretary of the RI Commerce Corporation, Stefan Pryor, provided the deep-dive brainstorming synergy to achieve this epic name? The Newport Resilience Innovation District. The very name is so innovative that the new District must be too. They must have really had to drill down to dig this one out! Talk about resilience!
And it's going to be a national model! Color me impressed!
