Two people were shot on Chalkstone Ave (at Clematis Street) in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood at about 7:00 pm on Sunday night during an attempted robbery.
A 25 year old woman was shot in the stomach, and a 22 year old man was grazed in the head.
I'll be down near the statehouse in Providence for an event at the VETS. My lodging is very close by. Is there any place or location near there that I should avoid?
I planned to go shopping at some gigantic mall (since we have virtually NO shopping here in VT) and maybe take a drive to the ocean to have some fresh seafood somewhere.
Recommendations? I'm only going to be there for 2 days.

I assume you would be staying downtown? One place to avoid walking around would be Kennedy Plaza (where the bus shelter is), especially after dark.
Right downtown you have the Providence Place Mall. I wouldn't call it "huge" (well MAYBE it would to you coming from VT), but it's as large as anything you'll find locally without traveling to the Boston area.
If you have a whole day to spare, I would take a drive down to Newport. Or if you like smaller, quaint villages; Wickford might be an idea.
For seafood, try Finn's Harborside in East Greenwich. Good food with a nice view.
Are you staying at the Renaissance? It's literally next door to Vets and a short block from the mall. Across from the mall is Waterplace park, and from there a nice walk along the river with some downtown views and small parks. Hemenways is along this route, a long time Providence destination for seafood. Dune Bros seafood shack is on the other side of the river on Dyer St for a more casual experience but they're closed until March so it depends when you're coming.
Or you could drive to Galilee (Narragansett), walk on the beach and eat at George's or Champlins, right near the fishing docks. Or the Coast Guard House, which is a bit more upscale. Unfortunately, most of the more popular clam shacks will be closed until April. Flo's in Middletown opens mid March.
Thank you MassNative and Sandsonik....really appreciate your feedback!!
I'm staying at a small B&B that's a 5 min walk from the VETS. I will have a little time to wander around so will plan out a strategy to stop at some of these places. Hemenway's menu looks really good....and I can most definitely visit the mall, park and the restaurant in a day.
"NEWPORT, R.I. (WJAR) — Newport police said they still haven’t made any arrests in the double shooting Monday morning at the Friendly Son’s of Newport on Farewell Street. “I heard that one or two people opened the doors and started opening up fire and shooting, I heard two or three people got hit,” said Assistant Manager at Tavern on Broadway Katie Mitchell. Police said someone called 911 around 1:15 a.m. and when they got there they found two men with gunshot wounds: 25-year-old Yordi Arevalo, who died, and 30-year-old Aroldo M. Noel Panjaqua, who is recovering."

Also, it was actually two people who were shot (one died). Why didn't you post it, redplum??
I thought you would post it.

It sounds like shots were fired without regard for who might get hit.
So was this possibly a hate crime? I understand that place was formerly a gay club called Raffles. I guess it's supposedly an Irish social club now, but I wonder if it's still a gay club. It's definitely still a gay club on Saturday nights.
For those unfamiliar with Farewell Street in Newport, one block away from this "social club" is White Horse Tavern - which is the oldest restaurant in the United States. It opened in 1673.
