My girlfriend and I are looking to buy a house. We are young and want a good neighborhood with good schools for future kids. I currently live in the short pump area and hate it. We were looking at the Bon Air area of Chesterfield but know nothing about it.

Does anyone know what crime is like in that area and if the schools are good? For the same amount of money, bon air has huge houses where as henrico and hanover are half the size from what I have seen.

Also, I have heard that south of the james river is all bad. Is that true?

Sigh, No not true.

There are a lot of beautiful parts of Chesterfield. I know nothing about Chester but Bon Air is a really neat area, interesting architecture, low crime, great schools and close to everything. I think that would be a great place to look with a future family in mind.

What's wrong with Short Pump? It looks nice. I used to live near it.

NO, not all southside is bad, LOL --I bet a westender told you that, heheheh. Richmond area residents tend to very territorial when it comes to their housing choices. Chesterfield offers many wonderful communities and areas encompassing all price brackets. I suggest you decide how far you want to be from work and really explore what is available with in that drive time...

I currently live in Chesterfield in an established, non short-pumpy neighborhood (they do exist thankfully). We have lived here for 4 years and have really enjoyed it. We initially lived close to Church Hill for a year and decided on this area. The area has all the amenities you could want as far as shopping/everyday living goes. I can't speak on the quality of the schools here but I haven't heard any overtly bad things from our neighbors with kids. good luck with the move!

We've been in Chester for over two years now. It has been a great transition for our family. You have access to 95, 295, 288, and 64 (a little farther away). And my schools have had a great experience in the schools.
