I am seeking recommendations for a decent hotel somewhere between Midlothian and Farmville. Bonus points if it has an indoor pool for kids that need to burn off excess energy.

All the hotels in Farmville are booked for a weekend event in March, so I am seeking alternate and not too distant accommodations.

That's pretty rural.... Unless you are willing to do a heck of a drive from midlothian.

OP might try looking at B&B listings online.

I have already made a reservation at a Midlothian hotel as my plan B. I was hoping to find something closer.

Everything I could find is already booked.

Have you checked the Lynchburg area, is about the same distance as Midlothian, maybe a little bit closer, but your drive may be less hectic since traffic is lighter.

You could also try Appomattox, only about half as far as Lynchburg. Look carefully at any hotel pics, though, the town is kind of dumpy. Also, try renting a house, it's often cheaper. We use homeaway.com and they have a four bedroom log cabin by H-SC for $175 a night or so. That might extend your options. We use homeaway all the time, we just read the reviews and pricing/fee info very carefully, to make sure other renters haven't had issues with the house or the owners.

Another option that just came to mind is the Virginia State Parks system. They have 1-3 bedroom cabins that range from about $70-120/night. Checkout Twin Lakes, Bear Creek, and James River State Parks. The pools and lakes are not opened that time of year, and you will may have to bring linens.

Just a thought.

Renting a house is a great idea, thank you! I tried Lynchburg as well as Appomattox and unfortunately anything "decent" is already booked. (I have issues making a reservation at places where I have seen online photos of rooms featuring cockroaches. )
