At some point Macy's will close all stores everywhere. Dying brand in a dying segment.

Those malls are pathetic now. Can't imagine what losing Macy's will do to them.

Simon should have redeveloped Virginia Center into one of their outlet centers. Too bad.

YUP! Probably nothing. Those two area's aren't great and most likely not a lot of Macy's traffic. Notice Short Pump isn't going anywhere!

short pump macys will go down too eventually. Having nothing to do with short pump. Retail has evolved away from department stores, especially mediocre ones like macys and the like

The Richmond area Macy's are all former Hecht's stores that were converted and perhaps have limited selections and are not very well managed. But just up the road in Northern Virginia, the Macy's stores are part of the original New York division and seem to have better assortments and better stores. These NoVa locations include original Macy's as well as converted Hecht's stores. When Federated and May Co. merged all of their stores into Macy's, that is where some of the problems began. But some of the nicer Macy's stores include Pentagon City, Tyson's Corner, and Fair Oaks and these stores have more designer assortments as well as the Macy's brands such as INC.

Before they were Hecht's, they were originally Thalhimers. But the Short Pump Macy's was never a Hecht's and is the Macy's flagship of the Richmond area. VCC and Regency Square are on the road to death and have been languishing for some time on their own. But some of these malls where Macy's will close stores nationwide are not awful places. The open air Suburban Square in Philadelphia's tony Main Line, just underwent a big renovation and it's a nice place to shop. Macy's closing is really a symptom of failure to adjust to a changing retail landscape.
