Hello,

Quick question as we are relocating this Fall, coming from Atlanta. Our kids are currently in charter schools and we have had concerns about their level of academic progress, ie. GA vs. elsewhere, in this case VA. Do the public schools, such as Henrico or Chesterfield, conduct any sort of placement exams to make sure that they are place in the right grade level. Our kids are late Aug birthdays so they can go up or be held back a grade so we want to make sure we put them in the right grade level in Richmond.

Thanks in advance for any input.

You don't mention their current age/grade, by practice a 3rd grader transferring in from another state would be place in that grade here. Henrico's kindergarten enrollment has 30 September as the cut-off so August birthdays are well within the windows. This link gives you the states requirements for enrollment, most districts will be in lawine with this. VDOE :: Enrollment in Virginia Public Schools

Thanks Yankee. I've got a current 2nd grader and a 6th grader. Without boring you, the 2nd grader should currently be a 3rd grader but because of the GA charter school lottery we had to accept a spot so he ended up repeating 1st grade. I'm trying to ascertain if with this move, we "catch" him up to 4th grade or have him go into 3rd grade.

Its not boring I work for a school system, I would suggest you contact the districts you are considering directly and ask them how they would evaluate placement. Its quite possible that they will look at the courses/grades and possibly do a placement exam to best place your 2nd grader, your 6th grader will be in Middle School for both districts.
