I'm not really sure it's a question of competing. My current workplace is filled with people who mostly have families and live in the suburbs. It's easier to get to where I work from both Midlo and West Henrico than the city would be. Most of the people who work here see that as a positive.

Personally, I would prefer to be somewhere where my lunch options weren't essentially Applebee's/Chili's/Olive Garden, but it's really not that big a deal since it's a 10-15 minute commute from the Museum District (which is about the same as my commute would be if I worked downtown).

I think you're taking this more seriously than most people would.

My office is in the city and I don't even have an applebees/chillis/or Olive garden.

Not all areas of the city are a mecca of stuff to do.

Parking is limited downtown. Employers are not going to eat that expense and employees see it as a "tax".

All the IT jobs out in the west end should be integrated into the city center -- like Charlottesville has done.
And why do you think that these suburban communities which are independent of the city want their accomplishments relocated? The days of the city-centric world are over and what you find drab and boring is enjoyable for many. Richmond has a lot of issues and depending on the company a suburban environment may provide them a more cost efficient option and place them better to their potential work force.

I don't mind. If I were to job search in "Richmond" I would hope the neighboring suburbs would come up, too. I live in Richmond and there are some suburban places that would be a quicker commute than other Richmond locations. I find quite frequently people refer to the entire MSA as "Richmond".

"Im from Richmond"

"Henrico"
Ok cool.

Atlanta has 16 counties that claim The ATL.

I think its normal in most places to refer to an area by its nearest city, if you say you work in Ashland people may not recognize it but Richmond they do.
