What is the status of the project? Im not in Richmond and Google turns up dated articles. What is the hold up and will it wind up being another Braves stadium fiasco? The building wasnt in the best condition when I was a teen in the mid to late 80s. A replacement has been long overdue. I heard they were planing a 17,500 seat building. That isnt large enough to accommodate professional sport teams. Not that this size area would ever be seriously considered. Are the tax payers blocking it?

Lots of people are concerned about the structure of the financing for the new arena and its extensive 'TIF' district. So much so that a FOIA was made by a well-known Richmond political advocate to learn more - a court decided he should be able to get the info that has been kept away from the public to this point. So details will be emerging soon on what all of that is. That may either delay or expedite the mayor's presentation of the proposal to City Council.

Ultimately, the powers that be would want to have all of the major issues worked out and potentially understand how a vote might look before the mayor actually presents the proposal to the City Council. And there have been a lot of closed, but ongoing negotiations with stakeholders up to this point. When it will actually go up for a vote is anybody's guess.

Personally, I think they need to shrink the TIF district to make the deal more palatable to public and lean more on private dollars. I think it will be a miracle if it actually gets voted on this year.

In case you haven't seen the PR site for the proposal, here you go: https://navyhillrva.com/

17,500 is only a little on the smaller side compared to most NHL and NBA arenas (and larger than a few). Seems most are in the 19,000 range. Not a huge difference.

If this comes about does this mean that Richmond might get a team? Very exciting Virginia needs a professional team.

No city is too small for a team. That's an old wives tale. Plus the team doesn't necessarily have to be Richmond's team. They just play there. No different than when the Cavs used to play in Richfield.

Too small and they won't support them.

It doesnt seem feasible bc they would need a large enough fanbase and be financially feasible. Perhaps they play in Williamsburg and it can be a Richmond/VA Beach area team and without a city in the name, just be "Virginia ________".

Yes. When you have no other teams you have the luxury to do that.

Its very doubtful Virginia's cities do not usually play together nicely.....
