Hello - I have been here for 3 months - I'm 31, did undergrad at CUA in DC - BS Arch - lived and worked in NYC for 5 years after - went back to school, Rice University in 2005 to obtain my MArch - finished in Jan of '08 and wanted out of Houston - came to Richmond for job at a pretty nice company and was interested in making a go at a 'tertiary' city where living is affordable and potentially there's much room and opportunity for development and growth - so far, I'm a bit disapointed - no cool bars, not much culture - this is what I'm feeling thus far I hope I'm wrong - can someone please help me feel differently? Even in Houston my wife and I found our favorite bar (very NYC) and met pretty hip people - here, I'm worried it's not going to happen...

We can relate to that. We moved here from Dallas to be closer to our fam on the East coast, but found the Richmond area not entirely to our liking. Don't get me wrong I'm definitely not bashing on the place, but from what we've seen so far it's not to our liking. We came from Dallas and had lived there for 7 years and I guess we have just grown somewhat used to being around a lot of people and a lot of large communities and tons of shopping malls, bars, clubs, you get the idea. And while there are some bars, clubs, shopping, etc here, it's just not quite the same. In all honesty I'm thinking we'll be here maybe another year and then head back to Dallas. We're also in our early 30's and have two boys. Good luck to you.

thanks for your reply - i'm staying with family in south side until we find a place in museum district or the fan - we're so close to DC and VCU is such a great art school I just expected it to be a bit 'hipper' here - i just hoped to find my niche here quickly but now i'm starting to feel like an outsider so to speak - even in Houston I found places and people that I really liked and could relate to - grad school helped of course - but i'm from the northeast (boston + CT) so i believed i'd feel more at home here than in H-town - not giving up yet but skeptical - any more feedback is welcome and appreciated - thanks!

The fan used to be full of the type of people and friends you guys are probably looking for. I am not really sure how it is now, I have lived out of the area for several years. You may find that once you find a place and have some neighbors, etc you will like it more. Shockoe bottom used to be really happening but it flooded a few years back and since then it really is not the same. I have been looking into finding other things in the area to do myself.

Unfortunately unless you actually go to VCU, you aren't going to experience any good partying

I moved to Richmond from the west coast about a year ago. I live in the museum district. Initially, I was a little disappointed at the Richmond venues, until I hooked up with MeetUp.com I joined several groups, and found myself having more places to go and things to do than my salary could afford. Best thing I ever did. Now, I have a deep well of sources for venues and places to go that I like vs 'paid the magazines to promote'. Remember, Richmond is still a much smaller place than Dallas, NYC, even NoVa, so you have to adapt accordingly, however, not too much.
Hope you explore!

Ok so yeah Richmond sux! I came back to finish school and honestly after living in FL for so long coming back here was like it is just a joke. It is good to raise a family and that is it! I hate VA it is a BS state. The only reason I came back is to be with my family before I got settled in FL. I am moving back to FL next month and can't wait. Good luck in Richmond really nothing to do but bars? lol

How in tha flip up can you sit and rationally compare Richmond Virginia to HOUSTON? NEW YORK CITY? DALLAS? Come on man! Get a head check! If you are looking to replace friggin HOUSTON TEXAS well lil ole Richmond will leave you with a HUGE void! Its like comparing apples and Westfalia centrifuges.

Well I'm glad to see it is not just me. All I can say is I'm sorry you had to move here. Born and raised in Richmond I've come to accept this city will never change. I'm trying to get out of here and to Seattle myself.
