Default Abingdon for retirment

Can anyone tell me about Abingdon. We have visited there twice and fallen in love with the area. Hubby wants to retire there. We would want 30 to 50 acres of horse friendly property. We would like to buy the property now, but not move for about 5 years.

The people we met on our visits seemed very friendly. I particularly liked a sign I saw in a shop window that said "Save our town keep Walmart out"

Thanks.

You might want to repost this on the Roanoke forum, which covers more of southwest Virginia to get answers from people who live closer.

I grew up in the area (Smyth County, not Washington, where Abingdon is located), and my mother still lives there. IMHO, Abingdon (aside from the junky I-81 ramp retail) is an ideal rural area. It has a decent hospital, it's on a major thoroughfare, it's close enough to small- and medium-sized cities, and it's kind of a magnet for smart people. Its downtown is charming, if not thriving, and it manages to feel like you're in the country without being too remote from civilization.

I'm sure you'll get a variety of opinions, but as small towns go in SWVa, I think it's one of the best.
