My guess is an immature gray rat snake...
good creature, as they pick off mice, rats, voles,
etc. Non-venomous, not aggressive, etc.

Not a real reason to kill it, imo.

This is the way I understand it:

Poisonous snakes have vertically elliptical pupils (cat’s eyes), facial pits between the nostril and eyes.

Non-poisonous snakes have round eye pupils and no facial pits between the nostril and eyes.

But do you want to get close enough to make this assessment.

At first glance I would say it is a Timber Rattler but without the tail I really cannot say...The Timber rattler is endangered and illegal to kill in Virginia too.....

In Florida we have a lot of snakes. The biggest problem I see where I live is the cottonmouth and the coral snake. Both extremely poisonous. We also have plenty of non venemous black racer snakes and they grow to around 5'-6'... I often see them but they are too fast for me to catch.... A few years ago an elderly woman came home to see a gator in her kitchen...She kept her garage door open and the critter somehow opened the screen door from the garage leading to her home and she found it resting in her kitchen....This rascal was 7.5 feet long..... Needless to say the woman ran like heck......

One night as I was walking towards the bedroom,
I heard a noise by the front door. I turned on the
light to see a small snake trying to get out. How it
got inside I don't know. I opened the door and he
quickly crawled outside, where he belongs.

When I see spiders in the house I catch them and
put them outside.

Non-poisonous snakes and spiders are beneficial.

I also have salamanders and red throated chameleons
living outside. Once in a while I will find a baby inside,
so I will gently pick him up and place him outside.
They too are very beneficial.

Its a corn snake which is part of the Colubridae (most common species of nonvenomous snake) family and you really had no reason to murder it.
