Hello everyone! My husband will be a student at SVU in Buena Vista this Fall, and I'm having a little trouble finding a rental suitable for our family. First, my problem could be that I'm looking in the wrong city on Craigslist- I've been looking under Roanoke- is that right? Second, we're used to the flat terrain of Arizona so I'm having trouble discerning what towns would be within 20 minutes of the SVU campus after factoring in hills and windy roads. Any suggestions on where to look? Also, we have 3 small children (4, 3 and 1) so I'd like to find a good preschool- here in Phoenix our oldest has attended a Lutheran preschool (although we are not Lutheran) and we would prefer to stick with a church run preschool, and if it has a elementary school program as well that would wonderful since we are not too keen on the idea of public school in the future.

Thanks!!

Buena Vista is about an hour north of Roanoke via I-81. Try the nearest town, Lexington which is a big college town, home of Washington & Lee and V.M.I.
Buena Vista is a friendly little town and set in a rural area. Staunton, Waynesboro, Charlottesville are not too far away either! Good Luck on your move!

I would concentrate on Lexington as that is the more happening town. It's in the same county as Buena Vista and is only 5-10 miles west. Lexington is also right on i81 and offers easier access to Roanoke or Staunton/Waynesboro.

This is also my personal preference, but Lexington is just simply a nicer town with more charm and character. Btw, these are two very small towns, so finding resources might be trickier than if you were looking into a larger city.

Here a link to the local newspaper. The News-Gazette Good luck!

Thank you for your replies! Turns out the Roanoke Craigslist was the right one, I guess I was just expecting more rentals in Buena Vista. Fortunately we found something that will work for our family. My husband was in the area this past weekend, and he also said we'd probably prefer to live in Lexington but neither of us have much experience driving in snow- so we picked something as close to the SVU campus as possible out of ease.

I was wondering do any of you know where the closest natural type grocery store is? Is there something similar to a Whole Foods or Trader Joes within an hour or so? Or are there any Farmer's Markets in the area?

There is a listing for a Healthy Foods Co-op in Lexington, but I have no personal info about it. Also Roanoke has a Natural Foods Co-op, but I've never shopped there. I believe the closest Traders Joes will be in Richmond, Glen Allen area, but that's about 125 miles from Lexington.

Check out this link for farmers markets in the area -- Lexington, Virginia Visitor's Center promoting all of Rockbridge County Market

It could be it is in a rural area. It is horse country, with 2 universities which are on the upper end of tuition. It is not flat country so I assume no room there for mass job producing companies. Probably, the locals prefer it that way.

Don't confuse the unemployment rate of the legal city of Lexington (which is only 2 square miles) and the larger Rockbridge area. The rate in Lexington is distorted by students (including non-dependent students like law students). The rates for Rockbridge County are much lower and more indicative of the area overall.

I wouldn't say the locals prefer it that way, but a lot of the decision-makers seem too. A lot of manufacturing left the area in the past 10-15 years just as it has in many regions. I do feel like there was more going on there economically and socially when I lived there in the '90s then there is there now. Aesthetically nice, but not some place you could pay me to live.
