We are currently living north of NYC and looking to retire some where south of here for a milder winter and lower cost of living expenses.

We were wondering about the Roanoke area ? We would love to have a house with a view ( like everyone else) like a river, lake or mountains. We love being out of doors, hiking and biking yet would like to be less than an hour from a City that has some culture, good restaurants and medical facilities.

We have been to Asheville NC and it is a possibilty but wondering if there would be a better place in Virginia?

Some good input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Smith Mountain Lake would be great! Plenty of retirees there from up north. My parents retired there three years ago and are loving it. Roanoke is less than an hour from their home. The hiking and biking is surely better in Roanoke than at the lake, but you would likely enjoy the lake more and may find more like-minded individuals there since there are so many who have moved there from NY, NJ, DC area, etc. And there are many homes with gorgeous lake and/or mountain views.

Look into Salem, VA also. Its right next to roanoke. The entire roanoke valley is great for retirees. Best thing to do is stopby sometime & drive around the small towns in the valley to see what you like.

Roanoke is the "new" Asheville!. Even the Mayor and city leaders all agree our area has much to offer.
In Roanoke you can live in the valley(not an hour away)and still have beautiful views with access to urban
amenities. The recent CNN "Best Places to Retire" also agree Roanoke is a top place to retire, also Lynchburg.
Certainly in Virginia it is well known this area is tops for retirees!

Take a look at Lexington. It's a beautiful college town and there are a lot of people from NY and NJ.

Default We're looking too!

We're looking to move from FLA to VA next spring, so trying to do our homework. As nearing 60's, we are thinking about using our RV to kind of check out areas before we commit. We want to stay close to the 81 corridor and found Abingdon to be really nice. Don't see any RV areas that have a good review during online searches.
I am so looking forward to change of seasons again (old CT gal here) and the Abingdon area really looks awesome.
I'd like to read the feedback and hope to find a good spot to park while we search for a rental. We work from home so even commercial/residential will work for us.
I'm wishing for spring already so we can get our move on!

Thanks, RLESGAL
