Hi, my name is Chris and my girlfriend and I were relocating to Roanoke, VA from Raleigh, NC. She is going to start school at Jefferson College of Health Sciences in August. We've made a trip this Friday to look at a few houses for rent in the Roanoke area. I'm new to the various forms of heating. I believe everywhere I've lived has used a HVAC system where I would be charged for electric for both heat and AC. Generally my utilities bill including electric would run $90-$150 a month. I am interested in the cost comparison of Oil heat specifically vs. HVAC or other systems of heating / AC? I've used the search function however it didn't provide the information I was looking for. Google searches have brought up some scary numbers in regard to oil heating. The houses we seemed to prefer were about 1,300 sqft and included central air and oil heat. Thank you.

From what I understand oil heating prices are dependent on what the cost of heating oil is at the time they fill up your tank. To me natural gas heating is the most economical and is warmer in very cold winters. Natural gas tends to warm the rooms more
Evenly than electric. Some homes have heat pumps which are expensive and they aren't good in very cold winters, they also break down more as do electric furnaces I am told.

I seem to recall that you can contact the electric and gas company to get a history of the bills over the course of the year for prospective housing.

As students, it would be ideal to get a place whereby utilities were already part of your lease payment.

Welcome to the area. You will be spoiled by the commute time around here. Hahaha. Good luck.

I have lived in Raleigh and in Southern CA and I will tell you- natural gas here in Roanoke is incredibly expensive! My heating costs several months ago were insane, and considering how affordable my electric A/C is I will likely just use space heaters this winter.
