Are there any decent sized thrift stores other than goodwill in Salem/Roanoke?

Nope

There is a pretty big Rescue Mission thrift store across from the Goodwill on 460E. The Habitat ReStore on Salem Ave. downtown has building materials and, upstairs, some furniture and housewares. And there are a few nice consignment shops but that's pretty much it for thrift stores.

Consignment stores get most of the better clothing. Also some furniture.

That must be the one I remember...is it off of a busy road? On right hand side? Has a LOT of books?

Not sure which place you're referring to - if the Rescue Mission store, note that it moved from downtown to 460E earlier this year. So if that's the one you remember, it's not there anymore.

The slightly more upscale clothing from the Rescue Mission goes to another shop - 2nd Helpings - on Williamson Road.
