DETAILS:
May start a job making $26,000 in Lynchburg, Va. I'm a single woman with one medium sized, hypo allergic dog. I only need a one bedroom apt- something small preferably with a small, fenced in back yard. I own a car- completely paid off and I'll be attending Liberty University. I hail from Miami so I'm sure the crime isn't close to this place since we seem to have cannibals roaming the streets.

QUESTIONS:
-Is this salary "comfortable" to live off from for a few years until I'm finished with college? (Cost of living is comparable to this salary)
-Which areas are close to the school and are safe to live in?/ Bad areas to avoid
-What is the average utility cost for a 1 bedroom, 1 bath?

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm sorry no one has offered any answers yet and, unfortunately, I know nothing about apartment prices etc in Lynchburg. There are some garden apartments off of Route 501 north near Graves Mill Road that look nice from the highway. I'm sure the people at Liberty could give you much better advice about apartments.

Regarding the salary, again, I'm not too sure because I don't know rents. LOL. But this site may help you calculate a bit Cost of Living Wizard | Salary.com

Lynchburg doesn't have a lot of crime but like everywhere there are drugs etc, you must be cautious and avoid precarious situations. The area around Liberty is pretty safe. Your biggest problem will be traffic on Wards Road where River Ridge Mall, Target, Walmart, and a zillon restaurants are located.

Best of luck. I hope others answer soon with better information for you.

You can live on $26k salary yearly in Lynchburg but I think you're biggest expense, except for food will be
rent/utilities. To save on rent, may I suggest you contact some local realtors in Lynchburg and ask if they
offer rentals? Sometimes the owners of townhomes will list their properties with realtors. Long & Foster is a good place to start. Also, Liberty U. may have some info on reasonable places to rent also. Good Luck in your search!

Yes. A decent 1Br apt can be had for $600/mo or less in a good area. That leaves about $188/mo for other exp. Utils will avg $100-150/mo. You should be fine.

Google "family budget cost of living Lynchburg". There is a website, something like "findthedata" that contains basic family budgets. It shows an annual budget of ~ $29K for a single parent and one child, with a breakdown by different expense categories (housing, transportation, food, etc.) So you and your dog should be good!

(I would post the direct link, but seems everytime I do that, I violate the City-Data terms of service..)

We have some great Lynchburg folks on this board and hopefully they will chime in.

The biggest thing I have picked up on is that there has been LOTS of downtown revitalization in the last several years so that will be quite noticeable. Liberty just keeps getting bigger so that will probably also be something that you notice!
