Hey, guys.

I'm current living in portsmouth, virginia but I'm planning on moving to Roanoke va next year because I love the Appalachian Mountains. I have been doing my homework on the city (as well as watching WSLS 10 newscasts on their android app). But really need to know something. Are there any safe parts of roanoke I should consider moving to? If so, where?

Looking for house or apartment?

Just you or a family?

Plenty of safe areas - some of the areas are very walkable/bikable while others are more auto dependent - so that will affect your choice!

Anything (buy or rent) that looks like an EXTREME bargain might be an area with issues!

Your two most likely options might be one of the larger apartment complexes - there are several near Tanglewood Mall that seem very popular and there are some out east of town. All of the ones I am listing seem just fine to me - hope others will chime in if they have a different opinion.

Near Tanglewood:
Honeywood
Pebble Creek
Windy Hill Key
There are several others as well

Sunscape is not too far from Tanglewood and seems really nice - maybe a cut above the others just based on what I see.

Summit is south of Tanglewood.

Glade Creek and Hickory Woods are NE of downtown. Orchards is further out and seems pretty nice.

The other big option will be any of the apartments located in or near downtown. These may run a little higher but are very popular - some new construction and some are really nice renovations of old buildings. River House in Wasena. The new construction right across from the medical school on Jefferson. Gramercy Park is new construction downtown - most everything else is redone old buildings. Some great spaces.

You will probably lean one way or the other based on personality so just go with feels right for you.

There are some apartments that seem to do well for folks with kids on a limited income and these are probably not what you would wanna choose. Nuff said.

There are plenty more options but this gives you a place to start looking!

My family just moved from Chesapeake to Roanoke. We have been living at Sunscape Apartments until we move into our new home in Daleville. Living at Sunscape has been a nice experience. Safe and very quiet here.

If you want to save a little bit of money but still be accessible to Roanoke then the 220 corridor between Roanoke - Boones Mill - Rocky Mount offers some affordable housing with apartments and home rentals. Less hustle-bustle and 220 is a direct connection to the Tanglewood area.
