Greetings Roanoke,
I live in Baltimore and my girlfriend in Asheville, NC so Roanoke seems like it would be an ideal meeting point for a weekend - distance-wise, anyway.

What are the things that a visitor absolutely must do in Roanoke? Is there anywhere nice to stay that isn't too expensive where we could walk to things?

We're into history, railroads and kitchy tourist stuff too. This will be our first time in Roanoke, so all suggestions are welcome!

Oh my check out the Rose Hill B&B - you can read about it on Trip Advisor. Owner Wendy also has a web site. Considering you get a HUGE breakfast and awesome afternoon snacks - the rates are wonderful.

It is walking distance to a park (Highland Park) and to a restaurant. Pretty close to downtown also (in Old Southwest).
