Everyone tends to want to generalize when asked about a specific area and its people. As with most places, Roanoke can not be generalized. The people who live in Roanoke vary from retirees to young college students and due to this there is a wide rande of mindsets. The numerous daycares attest to its young family population. The median income is relatively low for the area...but as with most areas there are the nicer areas and the not so nicer areas of town, and a whole lot of in between. The things that I think makes Roanoke stand out is the architecture in SW, the small town feel in a larger area, and the proximity to activities, such as nightlife, hiking, boating, live performances, festivals, and art. Roanoke really lacks in activities for younger children, and the places that do tailer to the younger crowds have hours that are not suitable for working parents and the costs are ridiculous. And my one major complaint is that the city spends all this money on developing and maintaining parks that our children can not use due to the lack of police action in driving off drug dealers, prostitutes, and other riff raff. Having been raised my whole life in the suburbs of DC, I find Roanoke to provide me with the benefits of a City, but the small town atmosphere of life in the Country.
